“I’m a Wedding Photographer, and Here are Four Things I Wish Couples Did During Their Wedding Ceremony” from Moho Photo

I’m sure that since announcing you’re planning a wedding, you’ve been given a lot of advice – both sought after and unsolicited. (Hopefully most of which is kind and helpful.) While every wedding is unique in its own way, after working in the industry, you begin to collect some tried and true pieces of wisdom that applies nearly universally.

Recently Vermont wedding photographer Moriah of MoHo Photos shared some of her best advice for couples getting married. I loved her perspective and wanted to share her suggestions and my reactions.

“While I’m all about capturing those candid wedding moments as they unfold,” says Moriah, “there are just some things that if I could tweak jussst a little bit, not only would the images be that much more powerful to look back on, but they would foster your connection to each other and your ability to be present that much more meaningful.”

You may read through this list and decide none of these are for you – and that’s okay! We hope that at the very least these suggestions inspire you to consider the details that matter most to you.

Hold Hands During Your Ceremony

Moriah: Anytime I’m going through images picking my favorites to edit and deliver, I always react strongest to images where people are connecting. One of the best ways I see connection happening is through physical touch. My biggest suggestion is as soon as your ceremony begins, hold your partner’s hands.

(My Take: YES! I actually included this as one of my top wedding hot takes. If you think you may forget in the moment, maybe ask your officiant to subtly clue you both to hold hands or move closer together.)

Don’t Let Guests Use Their Phones During Your Wedding

Moriah: This is probably my most controversial opinion, but I stand by it. Knowing that I don’t have to dodge cellphones getting in the way of my shot makes my job that much easier, and you’re doing your guests by upping their ability to be really present.

One recent trend I’ve seen and absolutely love is giving guests a moment to take photos of their own. You can do this by having your officiant give your guests 15-30 seconds to get up and get the shot they like right as your ceremony begins. By doing this intentionally, not only are you giving guests their moment to grab their own shots, you’re making a pretty memorable moment out of it. It’s a win-win situation!

(My Take: I totally agree with unplugged ceremonies, but think it’s so hard to manage. If a phone-free ceremony is important to you, I suggest having your officiant say something at the beginning of the ceremony, including a note in your program, and maybe also including a small sign.

I do like the idea of including an intentional moment for guests to capture photos, but I’d prefer doing this at the end of the ceremony; this could also give you an extra minute to collect yourself before heading back down the aisle!)

Have your Officiant Step Out of the Way for Your First Kiss

Moriah: This small effort makes a world of difference. Nothing makes a first kiss more weird than having someone intently staring directly behind your two heads. Another option I’ve seen is having your officiant stand in front of your guests. That way when you’re looking at your officiant, you can also see your guests, and gives me your photographer a more interesting angle for documenting the two of you as well as your guests.

(My Take: YES! Talk with them about this ahead of time so they know it’s important to you.)

Pause While Walking Down the Aisle

Moriah: This one is purely preference, but I love the unique perspective you get of you and your guests when you take a pause halfway down the aisle. You can do anything here from exchanging another smooch, celebrate with your guests, or do a little dance! Whatever you choose, take your time coming up the aisle and take it all in, you’ll be glad you did.

(My take: YES! Let this come naturally, but I loveeeee these shots – we even included a “just married” category in our Best of 2022 series!)

While there may be a lot of advice and suggestions thrown your way, it’s ultimately up to you to decide what matters most on your special day! Moriah’s suggestions offer a fresh perspective on ways to enhance the experience, and if nothing else we hope these tips inspire you to consider what matters most to you. Ultimately, focus on your priorities as a couple, and everything else will fall into place!

An Elegant September Wedding at The Mansfield Barn

September is a beautiful time to get married in Vermont and Madison and Chris’ wedding at The Mansfield Barn is the perfect example. This gorgeous late summer barn wedding is full of inspiring details – just scroll through the gallery below to see what we mean!

A Historic Vermont Barn Wedding Venue

Located in Jericho, The Mansfield Barn is a meticulously renovated post and beam Vermont Wedding Barn, originally built in the 1840s. Located at the foot of Mount Mansfield, the venue offers stunning mountain top views, rustic charm, and modern amenities (like indoor bathrooms, two suites for getting ready, and air conditioning!). It’s a great venue for couples who want the rustic elegance of a real, historic barn.

Elegant Barn Wedding Details

Destinations Found provided month of coordination to help the couple pull together all the details to create a memorable celebration. We love how the tables were simply dressed with white and champagne linens, maple syrup favors, and pastel floral arrangements. It’s simple and chic: perfect for an elegant barn wedding!

Cronin Cakes & Sweets served up a scrumptious two-tiered cake with classic white buttercream frosting and florals that complimented the bouquets by Tipsy Tulip. And, a four-flavor cupcake display offered guests several options to satisfy their sweet tooth after an evening of dancing!

Venue Spotlight on The Barn at Boyden Farm

If you are looking for a rustic and picturesque Vermont barn to host your wedding, look no further than The Barn at Boyden Farm in Jeffersonville.

Nestled in the hills of rural Vermont, this family-owned farm offers an idyllic backdrop for your special day. With the perfect mix of historic charm and DIY possibilities, The Barn at Boyden Farm is an ideal venue for couples seeking an intimate, unforgettable ceremony. Venue owner, Lauri, recently spoke with us to share more about this beautiful Vermont wedding venue.

Barn at Boyden Farm

The Vibe: What are three words or phrases to describe your venue?

The Barn at Boyden farm is authentic, historic and truly Vermont! You can’t beat the beauty of the natural landscape here.

The space: Can couples host their ceremony and reception on site? What are those spaces like?

Most couples choose to host their ceremony and reception on site. Guests will enjoy the spectacular mountain views as couples exchange vows in the shade beneath the open air post & beam pavilion.

On occasion, Vermont weather decides to challenge us with inclement weather that is unsuitable for an outdoor ceremony. In situations such as this, the hayloft barn space, primarily used for receptions, has the perfect ambiance for sharing your most special occasion with all of your family and friends.

The amenities: What do you include?

When a couple reserves our property for their wedding, their reservation includes use of the property for three days. We kick off your weekend with a rehearsal  ceremony and dinner or welcome party, if desired. We also provide delicious coffee and donuts or brunch during your final day with us.

We include chairs & benches at the ceremony site, patio furniture for cocktail hour – plus tables and chairs for your reception. We can provide interested couples with our complete list of onsite amenities. From the initial inquiry to when you arrive for your big day, our team is here for you!

On your wedding day, Boyden Events Property Managers are present throughout your celebration to welcome you all and assist with any property details from start to finish so that you can enjoy your time together.

The area: What is there to do in the local area?

Boyden Farm is located 30 minutes from both Stowe and Burlington. Whether you envision your wedding weekend in the mountains or in Burlington, there are many activities to add to your weekend itinerary. We particularly like to enjoy the Burlington bike path, Church Street, restaurants and breweries.

You can also explore our own neighborhood of Jeffersonville. For example, you can rent a canoe or kayak ride down the Lamoille River, which runs right past Boyden Farm. The Lamoille Rail trail and other various mountain bike trails are close for riding, running and hiking. Golf and Disc Golf are also fabulous group activities which are in the vicinity. The possibilities are endless!

The history: Does the property have a rich history?

The barn was originally built in 1800 and has been lovingly restored throughout the years. We maintained the original charm and beams, but added modern upgrades like full plumbing, AC, heat and gorgeous chandeliers. Boyden Farm has been in our family since 1914; our children are the 5th generation and we absolutely love sharing the property with you!

A Glamorous & Relaxed Winter Engagement Photo Shoot at Wild Sugar Homestead

Sure, we’re biased, but we stand by the idea that Vermont is the ideal location for a winter engagement shoot no matter where you’re getting married. Take Stephanie and Chris for example; this couple is tying the knot in Massachusetts but still traveled to Vermont for their winter engagement photo shoot!

The couple booked a “Sugar Shoot” at Wild Sugar Homestead in Newbury, Vermont, a unique offer that includes a one night stay at the Homestead and a one hour engagement session with owner and photographer Hallie Jade Pictures. (How fun is that?!)

We love the mix of looks in their gallery: part laidback, classic New England (the couple did meet at Dunkin Donuts, a New England staple, afterall!) and part rock and roll glamorous! Stephanie’s dramatic (and stunning) dress is a great reminder that engagement pictures are a wonderful time to get out of your comfort zone and try something you’ve always dreamed of wearing!

Check out both of their looks below!

Must Haves for Small Business Owners

Wouldn’t it be fun if we showered our entrepreneurial friends like we do when our loved ones get married or have babies? During this party you could get all the advice needed to start things off on the right foot, and a few essential things. (Plus, we’d rock out to a killer playlist like this together.) Here are a few must haves for small business owners would top my new business registry!

The Classic: Several Notebooks & Pens

Yep, even as an online business owner I am still 100% committed to having a paper notebook at all times. These are small enough to throw in my bag on the go. (Plus they’re cheap enough so I don’t stress if my toddler takes one to decorate with markers and stickers to “work like mama”.)

The WFH Indulgence: A Nespresso Maker

Dang if this hasn’t turned me into a coffee snob. I still love working from a coffee shop on occasion, but the Nespresso has made my morning coffee feel SO much more indulgent. I wish I had treated myself to this machine when I first started working from home!

The Small Business Must Have Email App: FloDesk

Hands down it’s the easiest software to use for making beautiful emails. It’s always one of my top recommendations. (Save 50% off your first year with my link)

The Gotta Have It Social Media Scheduler: Later

If you’ve been on a call with me lately (pun intended), you have heard me sing the praises of this social media scheduling tool. I recommended it waaaay before I ever had an affiliate code, because it truly is a game changer in how I plan my Instagram.

The Easy Check Out Tool: Thrivecart

This tool makes it super easy to build simple check out pages. I mainly use it for digital downloads (ex. Welcome Guide Template) and our Gift Guide membership. It doesn’t have all the features of Honeybook (which is what I currently use for membership), but it’s a great, simple tool. (I also appreciate that it’s a one time fee for lifetime access!)

The Best – Free – Online Organizer: Asana

I loveeee this project management tool! I have been using the free version for years, and have helped other business owners set their own up. It’s the best!

The Zoom Call Essential: A Ring Light

It’s nothing too fancy, but this little device does help me look a bit less like Casper the ghost on these dreamy winter mornings!

What would be on your new business registry?! I’d love to hear your go-to tools, devices and WFH indulgences – shoot me a DM on Instagram to let me know what I need to check out!

Lakeside Summer Wedding at Lake Morey Resort

Nothing says  “Summer in Vermont” more than shimmering lake views and sweeping mountains! Jesse and Brian had both things present at their romantic, weekend-long wedding celebration at Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, Vermont.

Lake Morey Resort: A Stunning Lakeside Wedding Venue

Lake Morey Resort is a picturesque, serene wedding destination no matter the season! The town of Fairlee is a popular summer and fall getaway that is easy to get to and offers a wide range of services and amenities perfect for wedding weekends.

Along with stunning lake views, expansive gardens and event rooms, Lake Morey Resort also provides accommodations,  personal on-site wedding coordination and complimentary use of canoes, kayaks and paddle boards to all guests.

A Relaxing Summer Wedding Weekend

When planning their wedding, Jesse and Brian wanted a location where their families could relax and experience the beauty of Vermont all weekend long. Their families travelled from near and far (some coming all the way from Hawaii) to celebrate the happy couple. Guests got to try out boating and other water activities, sit by the bonfire in the evenings, and explore the surrounding area.

On the day of the wedding,  the couple had to push back their ceremony due to down pouring rain, but it was worth the wait: the weather resulted in an incredible double rainbow!
